I have noticed that a lot of 'tech' divers only wear black dive gear, and refuse to wear any colour.

So if you wear all black dive gear (or try to) why is this?

I have yet to hear or find any sound reasons for wearing only black. One humourous reason given on scubaboard was this:
The actual reason for choosing black gear is to facilitate optimal streamlining and minimalization. The "color" black is actually the absence of all color. Since color doesn't bring anything to the dive why lug it around? By utilizing black we eliminate unneccesary drag and clutter caused by non-blackness, thereby maximizing safety, efficiency and enjoyment.

I personally like a bit of colour (but wouldn't want to be like a rainbow). I think its better to have a bit of colour so I'm easier to find on the surface if the boat loses me, or if my buddy loses me underwater. For example I chose a red wing over a black one (and yes I have been told this becomes brown at depth, but its red on the surface), and I have yellow fins (its really easy to follow these especially with the movement).

So if you are of the all black persuasion, please share.

NB: this topic is not having a go at anyone, but just looking for answers, and a bit of debate maybe.

I was looking for the "all of the above" option but you seem to have neglected to include it so I used other..

Another reason is that a lot of gear doesn't come in colour option, try and get coloured jets here. The only wings i've seen in colour have been OMS "Death" wings. Drysuits seem to predominantly be black etc etc..

Besides having mainly black gear prevents dive trips from looking like a gay pride parade.. Although I guess if there are moustaches on board it can look a bit "Biker manlove"

because we al secretly want to be ninja's.

my drysuit has a light blue go faster area on it. and my wetsuit has a bit of blue. these things just help to accentuate the black.

besides, we all know that black makes you look like you've got a big...

As PB mentioned, most stuff comes in black, but that's probably because most people would only buy the black option if there was a choice. When I first got dive gear, it was mostly bright green. I looked like a twat (that's not to say I don't still look like a twat in black, but a twat in dayglo green is far easier to spot). I don't just have black gear. I've got some stainless steel bits as well. And white tanks. Thankfully they're not yellow. Yellow tanks look like a pair of bananas on your back.

My dry suit is blue. Blue is the new black!

Never seen any other colour jet fin than black so black they are.
Wing is black and grey although the grey is hidden.
Mask has a black skirt as I prefer not having the distraction of light entering from the side that you get with a clear skirt.

Not sure I'd want black tanks due to them heating up in the sun but galvanised tanks have a certain appeal.

My wetsuit has a bit of blue with the black and the fins I use with it are also blue.

As I said blue is the new black.

Oh my regs are chrome. which is the new blue.

It wasnt really a conscience choice. more a fact that thats the colour most gear is available in. And I think that is due to the manufactures knowing that most people are happy with black so they only produce one colour. Where if they offered differnt colours it would cost more.

Packhorse, you definitely can't be classed as someone that tries to go all black, unless blue really is the new black.

And if Alex's blue speed theory is correct then you must be bloody quick underwater when you're in the papa smurf suit!

Why would you want to look like you've got a big ass? Maybe if you were a latino chick.

Flipper, you definitely don't look like a twat with your all black gear. Maybe Blackadder, but that might be intentional.

I always thought a moustache was compulsory in the service? Or does that not apply to poms?
