I have been asked to upgrade a couple of MR11 sized 10watt HID dive lights to LED. These are the non focasable 35mm sized type.
One is the older Dive Rite and the other I have yet to see.
The Dive Rite uses a 6 deg 10 watt Welch Allen HID bulb which is the same as the Trail Tech 10 watt HID

So far I have done a comparison between the HID and a SSC P7 10watt LED
The only MR11 style optics I have for the LED is an aspheric type that puts the LED out of focus in an attempt to merge the 4 individual dies of the P7.

Unfortunately the ID of the DR light head is about 1mm smaller than the diameter of the P7 optics so I am going to have to cut the optics down a little.

The P7 is brighter and whiter (the HID is a bit blue), it also has a wider beam angle and more hot spots in the light.

Well I have finaly completed Shane's (northland dives) HID-LED upgrade. I choose a D bin P7 led from Kai Domain with a 35mm reflector from DX. I used a Kai 3 mode driver.

Although his Fa & MI 10w HID seemed to have the same bulb and ballast as my Trail Tech HID the results are quitd different as seen by the 1st pic. On closer inspection the bulbs are Welch Allan M10P001 for the Fa&Mi and M10P002 for the TT

TT left Fa & Mi right

Anyway...these are the upgrade shots.
1st the LED left with frosted glass defuser vs HID right

And with out the defuser

Although the LED does give a slightly wider beam its colour is much more neutral and so much brighter. Its the clear winner here!

The LED is MUCH brighter than the HID!

Nice one.

Would you Packhorse do more of these upgrades to LED if given an older caniter light that comes with HID?

Just modified another Dive Rite 10w HID to LED. I used a SSC P7 LED again. Results were predictable.
The original HID bulb is a Welch Allyn B10N002. I cant find any info on this but by all accounts it seems very similar to the one used in my reference Trail Tech 10w HID except it seems to have a slightly wider beam.
The LED has the tightest beam of the lot and also gives out the most spill light. It is also the whitest light ( please excuse the blue tint but my camera was set to tungsten white balance). All setting on the camera were kept constant for all shots. The LED does have a dark spot in the centre. This is very common with this type of multi die LED and is not noticeable underwater.

Pics as follows. Trail Tech 10w HID, Dive rite HID, SSC P7 using 35mm (MR11) reflector.

While I am at it these are 2 more comaprison beams. 1st is the W200 with a Cree MC-E (much like the P7 LED) and a Cree R2
