Hello all,

I have just acquired myself a bit of land that is a bit too daunting to face with my push it myself mower. So, I'm starting to look at buying a second hand ride on.

Does anyone own a ride on mower, or have advice as to things to look for, watch out for, price guides, makes etc for the complete novice to this field?

What size blade is recommended, engine size etc etc.

I've got about 2.5acres, flat, garden lawn and paddock style grass.

ta

Alex

Joseph took a moment to reflect on his life of relentless toil and hardship and thought to himself quietly.. "If Sir Alex goes ahead with his motorised plans for the estate.. I'll be forced back to turning tricks on the docks in no time.."

Congratulations on your new land.. Where is it?

Sorry don't know much about mowers as our place is pretty steep and needs a line trimmer for most of it.

Sheep work pretty well on fenced land.

PB - you just love putting prtraits of yourself online don't you!

Bluey - I'm moving up north (Just past Whangarei) so the opportunity to get a bit of land after being in Auckland for three years was just too hard to resist!

get a couple of weaner calves - let them eat the grass for you, then after a year or two shoot them and eat them. Cheaper than a ride on and you get home kill meat for virtually free.

Watch out for ALL second-hand ride ons, as they have dumb clutch mechs on them seems to a pain in the ass. A mate and I tried fixing up, and it seems that if something goes wrong with the all the belts, it instantly destorys itself cutting its self to bits :O If you've got quite a lot to mow, I'd get an old tractor and a mower attachment for the PTO. simple, and about the same price.....won't break down.....just a lot bigger to store.

I've used a few garden tractors in the past. They all were made with serious engineering compromises to keep the price down. Forever breaking - belt drives fail, crappy clutches, weak attachment mounts, etc.
Hybrid's suggestion sounds like the best one to me. Or get a couple of kune kune pigs. Keep the grass down. Make great pets. Make great bacon ;)

I've never tried kune kune bacon - does it taste different from normal bacon?
