Are there any good guidelines out there for repetitive diving?
I’ve off to raro for a bit of diving in a few weeks, and initial plans are to dive as much as possible. That effectively works out to 2 dives per day, 8 days straight. A fair number of these dives will be in the recreational no-deco(ish) range, however I do plan on doing a few deeper deco dives, though nothing too extreme. I believe Nitrox may be an option, so I may use this on the way up from the deco dives (but keep to air profiles), and pad out all dives with very slow ascents and extended times in the 6 to 3 meter range.
Any rules of thumb out there as to how many days of consecutive diving is too much in terms of pushing the risk of DCI?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules to consecutive dives, I did 2 deco dives a day for six days, diving a profile more conservative than my super-conservative suunto and I survived. :)
It depends on the diver, the dive, and about a million things too :)

Yeah, from what I've read, nobody's particularly keen to commit to any firm rules, but with the lack of deco chamber in Raro, I'm keen not to push it too far. I'll probably just add a bit of padding to every dive profile and keep well hydrated...

There has been some studies on this-mainly with the big liveaboard set-ups in places like PNG.
It appeared that you are more subseptible on days 4 & 5. This was on DM's who were doing 4-5 dives a day. But as a DM your all over the place looking after your customers and your more likely to have see-saw profiles.
As you say Flipper, keeping it conservative and staying well hydrated is definately going to help. Incidently, apple juice was found to be the best fluid for keeping your hydration up.

I didn't rate Raro that much. Bleached out reefs and all that. No O2 on the boat etc. Good food and cheap piss though. :D

Very true, but there are some great drop-offs, it's warm, you get to hoon around on a moped all day, you can't get lost on the island, and it's warm (had to mention that bit twice) 8)

What about other areas of the cook islands? Any good?

Aitutaki(spelling?) was more my scene than Raro-after my first dive there the DM used it as an excuse to have a beach party!
The place is mostly deserted-even in the height of the season. There were a few soft corals coming back-mushrooms, leather corals and some other weird things. A few table corals and some acropora. I saw pipe fish in a breeding dance and a few lionfish. Some caves-i LOVE caves.
Cars with no panels, doors or windows. A bank that only opened tuesday for 4 hours. The friendliest locals. It's like Raro but tiny.
One foot island is pretty cool too. You can get your passport stamped in the post office there-the only building on one foot island.
Some of the outer islands in the cook chain are still inhabited by cannibalistic tribes  Which is v cool, unless you happen to get invited for dinner.

But Raro is a great place. It's always warm-even the rain is warm. Island evenings are quite fun. I had the biggest cocktail ever in Raro-it was served in a goldfish bowl and had every spirit in you could imagine. The food in the restuarants there is amazing. Mostly seafood but i love seafood. I recommend the Flame tree by Muri beach. Gecko's are everywhere and i love Gecko's. It's warm. Did i say it's nice and warm? I snorkelled about every day and see puffer's, octopus and a miriad of butterfly fish. Speed limit on the island is a little above walking pace but there were one or two Subaru imprezza's? Couldn't understand that??? Hooning about on mopeds is fun. As is getting your Raro driving license. Overall Raro is a great place but the reef's are gone-totally wiped out. So if you want to see pristine reefs forget it. Otherwise it's a great place. I'd definately go again. But i wouldn't take my dive gear, i'd just snorkel. We were there for 14 days and it rained for 12 which meant you couldn't dive as the run off made the surrounding sea's completely brown and zero vis. So i utilised my time drinking, eating and meeting locals. Loved it.
