Had a pretty good day out of Hokianga yesterday. The conditions were perfect with the sea being glass calm and sun hidden behind clouds(great when your sitting on the back of a boat for 8+ hours....
No marlin but tons of tuna about saw some in the water too.....
However, We did get the privilege to dive a spot thats only been speared once before (think rock coming up to 80m) being the camera-man/shark tester i got to see one of the most amazing things ive seen in ages a school of 100's and 100's of kingfish swimming up out of the deep blue to greet me.
Mike Nailing a 22kg kingfish
A kingfish just as the spear went through
mikes kingfish zooming off into the deep
my kingfish
I filmed several fish getting speared(I AM THE MONEYSHOT MAN!) after that i swapped the camera for a gun and blasted a nice kingi..i even managed to pass it to the man in the boat before he dropped it by accident and it slowly swam away.... GRRRR
the next kingi i impaled took the whole float under (these are marlin floats too btw) before it broke off double GRRRR she was a goodun...
The final king to get the MacDonald spine smasher was a nice one of about 18kg which i promptly stoned! not the heaviest fish ive speared but the longest kingi by far..
On the NZ record front Jess Whiddit got a new woman's trevally record and kingfish record.congrats!
