I have been a thinking......

Imagine a large ring that slips over the lens tube on a camera housing with 4-6 wide angle LEDs projecting light forward.
This would be used instead of a strobe and would mainly be used for macro shots. I think on other shots it may cause too much back scatter.
This would eliminate any shadows caused by the stock flash and make the unit more compact than if you were using added strobes.

I predict even light spread could be achieved with in 5 cm of the ring so 5 cm macro shots will be shadow free

Its not a simple build as the LEDs need to be mounted on aluminium while the front must be clear acrylic or polycarbonate. It must also be water tight and have a separate battery cannister. Variable light levels can easily be accomplished.

Anyone out there interested in such a lighting system?
Im guessing about $400 for the light system plus the battery pack. This could be any old dive light that takes at least 4 C celled batteries.

Would anyone be interested?

I was going to ask you if you had ideas for this. But I was thinking another route. You have great lights for throw, but none that would work for flood or video lights. Do you have any more ideas on this? Would the 4 q5’s work with a different reflector and no aspheric lenses. In the Pacific Northwest under docks it’s pitch black, and ya it’s nice to have throw, but sometimes a wall of light would be better.

Yeah I have thought of it. Basickly just the same as the 4 Q5 set up but have noe optics at all. Should give a very wide and even flood of light.
Im still deciding between the 2 ideas.

It's exactly like the Nikon, same idea, same placing of the light source, same mounting style just hasn't had squillions spent on it.
The only drawback i can see is you won't be able to adjust the lights individually to differing angles and you'll probably get shadows cast on the subject. Miles better than the standard flash though 8)

The main difference it this is a constant light not a strobe. I dont think shadows on the subject will be a big concern. The light spread is quite even. The pics I have taken so far are quite shadow free. The above 2 are probably the worst but I think they will be improved once I add the frosted lens.

As for spending sqillions on it. To late. I have already spent a lot of time on it and not even half way there. The light is only half the package. It still needs a battery cannister to power it. If I was to produce one for sale cost would be over $1000.

Thanks dude.
They say necessity is the mother of all inventions. I disagree, I think being a tight ass helps. Im always trying to save some money by DIY. And of course when I am DIYing I get to change things around a bit.
Here is the finished product.
