Seems a bit strange that a highly experianced dive instructor is so crap at navagation.

Depends who's side of the story you believe.

If the dive boat crew were convinced that this was such an easy dive, were they really keeping such a keen look-out, and didn't miss them when they surfaced.

Reality - it sounds like there could have been failings on both sides....
